At a Los Angeles press conference this February, YouTube’s CEO Susan Wojcicki introduced YouTube TV, the online video leader’s entry into the TV subscription service.
Starting in select US regions, YouTube Live will offer more than 40+ channels including all four of the major broadcast networks and select cable channels for $35 a month, which also includes YouTube’s Red premium service and unlimited Cloud DVR space.
YouTube with its new SVOD offering is directly targeting competitors AT&T’s DirectTV Now, the Dish Network’s Sling TV, and Sony’s Vue and at a very competitive rate that will appeal to its audience base.
At that February press conference, YouTube announced that it’s daily rate of videos played has exceeded 1 billion, compared to 1.25 billion hours of daily US TV viewership. With these stats, it makes perfect sense for the platform to capitalize on its massive group of VOD viewers and challenge the market of lack-lustre cable-television bundles with its own competitive, content rich, SVOD offering.
As stated by Susan Wojcicki, “Younger generations want to consume TV the way that they’re used to watching TV online, live and on-demand.“ Her company with its established massive audiences, is positioned to offer the best solution to cord-cutters.
With YouTube’s entry into the subscription-based viewing market, it only proves to content owners that packaged online TV playout is here and its in demand. This online model also opens new and additional advertising opportunities and it reaches new segments of viewers, compared to traditional broadcasting; the customization possibilities and reach for online content is far reaching.
There is little doubt that YouTube TV will become a significant, if not dominant factor in this segment, but there is still lots of opportunities for you to capture your market share with your content and programming ideas.
